In the beginning . These first, nationally Australian, postage stamps were promised for January 1, 1913. As this was a New Year Holiday, the 1d value was issued on January 2. The first printing consignments of ½d, 1d, and 2d, were issued in undivided vertical sheets of 240. Possibly due to the security risk of the stamp sized gutter between the sheets, subsequent consignments, for all values, were delivered in single plate sheets of 120 stamps. Australian State stamps were not withdrawn. Rather, the Roo issue was brought into use in each State, and Post Office, as and when stocks of the States' stamps were exhausted.
