Replaced by platypus 1 Sep 1938 Screw mounts were inserted into both plates during small wmk in the 5th and 2nd columns bottom margin. (not illustrated) Early CofA printings are similar. Towards the end of life however, in the last printings, additional screw mounts were required. The upper plate had begun to crack, in a similar fashion to the lower, and some beading of the jubline fell away. The lower plate was similarly treated with screw hole (but the jublines, with the crack that was always there from 3rd wmk on, remained consistent). There are a series of progressive wears to both plates. The two states illustrated here *should* (and are) numbered in the ACSC .The rest are quite pointless, can never have a price differential between them and do not require separate cataloguing. ACSC pointlessly numbers 3 states (without proper explanation) for upper and 2 for lower, confuses it's illustrations and describes the cracks wrongly (not recognising these occurred on earlier paper). The reality is there are many progressive examples. Below are the beginning and ending states which are clearly collectible as different blocks. The intermediary remainder can be confusing with ink filling or alternatively scratches, they are a nice specialist study on an album page and that's all they should be.
#29(1)zzabcd: Upper. (being Crack to left). Jubline beginning do drop away, and Screw hole
Lower. (being the usual dead centre crack). then Screw hole. |
