Papers.

Watermarks and papers can be the difficult to grasp area of the 1d KGV. For the 1d Violet and Green printings, the watermark changes are relatively straightforward. For the 1d red however, the single watermark appeared in distinctly different papers. Along with shades, paper usage was dictated by war conditions. Whatever was available at the time. Since these paper and watermark variations were used on several denominations, a more complete description is given in a separate section.

This table hopefully illustrates some interesting characteristics.

bulletRough and smooth papers were concurrent during their period of use from 1916 to 1918, ‘the war years’.
bulletThe die3 plate was a use-up issue of no longer need end-of-war, war savings paper.
bulletA paper shortage occurred in 1924. The 1d green used up residue stock of Large Multiple, followed by emergency unwatermarked paper.
bulletThe left plates were retired in 1918 due to rusted cliches, and did not re-appear for a decade until Ash repaired them with substituted cliches.

Single watermark. Note that the so called single watermark paper as used on KGV is the 2nd watermark paper as used on the Kangaroos due to wartime shortages.

Papers varied between thin, thick, semi-transparent, semi surface, etc. But these are varieties of the specific paper, rather than clear distinctions between types in this table.
