Not to be outdone by two other states, NSW issued a frivolous 150th anniversary of it's founding.

The design is taken directly from a somewhat stilted painting of Captain Phillip landing in Sydney Harbour, January 26th 1788. An error in the design shows epaulettes worn by the officers. These were not adopted by the Royal Navy until 1795.

New Perforations

The new perforation is the same as the zoo / robes series and reflects the introduction of the new perforators intended for that series.

A cylinder was produced of the 2d design, from which the denominations were erased and the 3d and 9d values subsequently engraved by TC Duffell.

Imprints

Imprints underwent a change of position and size during the manufacture of these plates. The imprint was influenced by the merging 1937 Zoo series and in particular the lyre bird.

The 3d exhibited the standard 43mm imprint (J over NO), placed in the standard position of the centre bottom gutter between panes.

The 2d & 9d however show the new 38mm imprint (J over N) and it was placed in the new 'zoological' position  of the bottom left of the left pane only. (This style size and position was subsequently altered for later issues to appear in both panes).

  Plate make up

Two different plate make ups were made for the 2d.

1) Four, copper electros, each having a single 38mm Ash imprint in the lower left pane only. One plate of which is type A, the other 3 are type B.

2) A steel master plate for four nickel coated electros. These have the 38mm Ash imprint in the central gutter. All are type A

Type A and B are from two transfer rollers. The type A transfer roller additionally had the blank working die for the 3d and 9d derivatives.

It would appear that all plates had plate numbers in each of the four corner positions.
